An epiphytic orchid native to Ecuador, Stanhopea frymirei grows in humid tropical forests with pleated leaves rising from clustered pseudobulbs. Pendent inflorescences carry large waxy orange-brown flowers marked with dark spots. Their complex central lips have prominent hornlike structures, and the flowers open below the supporting branch or basket. Photographed in Florida.
