Stachytarpheta microphylla

A shrub native to tropical America, Stachytarpheta microphylla bears small opposite leaves on branching stems. Long slender flower spikes produce vivid red to magenta tubular flowers that open a few at a time. Each corolla spreads into small lobes beyond the narrow tube, while older portions of the spike remain bare. Photographed in Florida.
