Sphagnum magellanicum

A peat moss native across cool regions of the Southern Hemisphere and the Americas, Sphagnum magellanicum forms dense water-holding mats in bogs and saturated highland ground. Compact branch clusters surround upright stems, creating red, pink, or green cushions. The plant reproduces by spores rather than flowers. Photographed in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia.
