Sphaeropteris lepifera pale-scaled coiled young frond emerging beneath divided tree fern leaves

Sphaeropteris lepifera

A tree fern native to eastern Asia and nearby Pacific islands, Sphaeropteris lepifera develops a tall trunk crowned by large arching fronds. Young fronds emerge tightly coiled and covered with pale scales before expanding into finely divided leaves. The trunk records old frond bases beneath the spreading crown. Photographed in Florida.
