Sobralia violacea


A terrestrial orchid native to tropical South America, Sobralia violacea inhabits humid forests and Andean mountain slopes. Its large violet-lavender flowers have broad spreading segments and a deeply frilled lip with a pale yellow throat. Tall cane-like stems carry prominently pleated green leaves below the short-lived blossoms. Photographed in Colombia.
