Sinningia sellovii

A tuberous perennial native to southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina, this species sends up seasonal leafy stems from a swollen underground structure. Opposite textured leaves have toothed margins, and pendant red tubular flowers arise from the upper nodes. Each corolla narrows near the base and opens into short lobes. The aboveground growth may die back during dormancy. Photographed in Florida.
