Sciurus stramineus (Guayaquil squirrel) is native to western Ecuador and northwestern Peru. It inhabits dry forest, humid forest, secondary woodland, plantations, gardens, and city parks. The species is among the largest tree squirrels in its region and has a heavy body, powerful hind feet, and a broad tail. Coat color is highly variable, ranging from pale gray or whitish to darker brown, sometimes with contrasting underparts.
It is active by day and spends much of its time in trees, where it feeds on fruit, seeds, nuts, shoots, and other plant material. Individuals also cross the ground between feeding sites and readily use modified landscapes where mature trees remain. Nests are constructed from leaves and twigs in branches or tree cavities. The IUCN considers the species Least Concern because it remains widespread and locally common within its range. Photographed in Ecuador.
