Vista of San Gil
San Gil, Colombia

San Gil is known as the adventure sports capital of Colombia due to its wide range of adrenaline-filled activities such as whitewater rafting on the Río Fonce and Río Suarez, paragliding over Chicamocha Canyon, caving, bungee jumping, mountain biking, abseiling, and hiking. Located in the department of Santander, it sits at an altitude of approximately 3,600 feet above sea level and enjoys a warm, temperate climate year-round. The town is about 60 miles south of Bucaramanga, the departmental capital. San Gil is also a hub for exploring nearby natural attractions such as Chicamocha National Park (Panachi), Cueva del Indio, and Juan Curí Waterfalls. Nearby colonial towns like Barichara and Guane are accessible by scenic hiking trails, including the Camino Real, a stone path built by the indigenous Guane people and later improved during colonial times.
