Sambucus nigra
Sambucus nigra is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to Europe and western Asia. Its opposite compound leaves surround broad, flattened clusters of numerous cream-white flowers. The clusters later carry glossy purple-black drupes on branching stalks. Older stems develop pale bark with a soft pith. Research-grade observations document the species in Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, and Peru. Photographed in Colombia.
