Salvia pratensis subsp. haematodes

Salvia pratensis subsp. haematodes is a perennial meadow sage with basal leaves and upright flower stems. Violet-blue two-lipped flowers occur in separated whorls along each spike, with dark calyces remaining around the corolla bases. The broad lower lip projects beneath an arched upper lip. This taxon is associated with open grassland and other sunny temperate habitats. Photographed in Florida.
