Salvia polystachia

A perennial sage native from Mexico through Central America, Salvia polystachia grows in open mountain habitats and disturbed ground. Its long branching flower spikes carry numerous blue-violet two-lipped flowers among narrow green to purple-tinged calyces. Opposite leaves with toothed margins occur along the upright, distinctly square stems. Photographed in Colombia.
