This plant is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial native from Europe to western Siberia and Afghanistan. Its rough, scallop-edged leaves range from heart-shaped to oblong. Small, two-lipped flowers grow in crowded clusters along upright, branching spikes, with purple bracts beneath them. Cultivars offer blue, purple, pink, or white flowers.
