Ruellia macrophylla

Ruellia macrophylla is a shrub native from southeastern Mexico to Venezuela and parts of the Caribbean. It has broad, opposite leaves with pointed tips and slightly wavy margins. Branched flower clusters arise from the leaf axils, bearing scarlet tubular flowers with five spreading lobes and protruding stamens. The flowers are followed by club-shaped capsules. It grows in moist forests and occurs below 3,000 feet in Colombia. Photographed in Sierra de Nevada Santa Marta, Colombia.
