Rossioglossum schlieperianum

Rossioglossum schlieperianum is a pseudobulbous epiphytic orchid native to Costa Rica and Panama. Broad leathery leaves rise above compressed pseudobulbs, and arching flower stems carry large yellow blossoms patterned with reddish-brown bands and spots. A bright yellow lip projects from the center. Research-grade observations document it in Panama. The flattened pseudobulbs store water and nutrients and produce broad leaves before the patterned inflorescences emerge. Photographed in Colombia.
