Riohacha is the capital of the La Guajira Department in northern Colombia and sits along the Caribbean Sea at the mouth of the Ranchería River. With a population of under 300,000. The city is located in one of Colombia’s driest regions, characterized by semi-arid and desert landscapes, intense sun, and high temperatures year-round. Despite its arid climate, Riohacha is known for its long beachfront, palm-lined promenades, and vibrant Malecón, where Wayuu artisans display and sell colorful mochilas (handwoven bags), hammocks, and jewelry. Riohacha is a gateway for travelers heading to remote destinations in La Guajira Peninsula, such as Cabo de la Vela and Punta Gallinas, the northernmost point of South America. Economic activities in the region include livestock grazing, small-scale fishing, salt production, and tourism focused on nature, indigenous culture, and coastal scenery. The city also holds cultural significance as the heartland of the Wayuu people, the largest indigenous group in Colombia. The Festival of the Sea and Wayuu cultural events are prominent annual attractions.
