Rhododendron indicum (Azalea)

This plant is a compact evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub in the Ericaceae family, native to Japan. It has glossy green leaves that can turn red or purple in autumn. The wild species bears reddish pink, open funnel-shaped flowers singly or in pairs. It has also contributed to the development of Satsuki azalea cultivars through selection and hybridization. Like other azaleas and rhododendrons, it contains grayanotoxins and is poisonous if eaten. Photographed in Bogotá, Colombia.
