Upclose Rhizophora mangle flowers
Rhizophora mangle (Red Mangrove)

The red mangrove, this species is a vital component of tropical estuarine ecosystems. Its notable propagation mechanism involves viviparous "seeds," or propagules, which mature into full plants while still attached to the parent before dispersing into the water to take root in shallow areas. These mangroves flourish in subtropical and tropical regions around the world. They are well-adapted to brackish waters and salt marshes where they often form their own unique ecosystems, known as mangals. Not only do they stabilize the coastline, but they also support a diverse range of wildlife, from fish to birds and even crocodiles. Photographed in the department of Sucre, Colombia.
