Reutealis trisperma inflorescence with peach-color flowers under blue sky

Reutealis trisperma

This plant is a tree in the Euphorbiaceae family, native to the Philippines. Also called Philippine tung, it can reach about 50 feet tall. Its alternate leaves have smooth edges and often heart-shaped bases, with two glands near the top of each leaf stalk. Branching clusters contain separate male and female flowers on the same tree; their five petals are yellow-white, often flushed pink. Rounded fruits have three or four lengthwise ridges and contain oil-rich seeds. The seeds are poisonous, but their non-edible oil has been investigated as a source of biodiesel. The species is classified as Vulnerable. Photographed in Barranquilla, Colombia.
