An orange Quercus texana leaf displays deep pointed lobes among green foliage

Quercus texana (Nuttall Oak)

Nuttall oak is a deciduous tree native to the central and southeastern United States, especially floodplain forests of the lower Mississippi basin and Gulf Coastal Plain. It can reach about eighty feet tall and develops a broad crown with age. Its deeply lobed leaves have pointed, bristle-tipped ends and can turn red or orange in autumn. The species is also planted as a shade tree outside its native range. Photographed in Virginia.
