Orange autumn foliage fills the broad rounded crown of a mature Quercus alba

Quercus alba (White Oak)

White oak is a long-lived deciduous tree native to eastern North America, from southeastern Canada through much of the eastern United States. Mature trees develop spreading crowns, and their leaves have rounded lobes. Slender male catkins hang from the branches in spring. The acorns mature in a single growing season and sit in shallow, knobby cups. The wood is used for flooring, furniture and barrels. Photographed in Virginia.
