Pterocarpus acapulcensis
A tree native to Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela, it belongs to the Fabaceae family and grows mainly in seasonally dry tropical habitats. Its rough bark releases a sticky, blood-red resin when damaged. The alternate, compound leaves have dark green upper surfaces and paler undersides with golden hairs along the main veins. Bright yellow flowers form clusters at branch tips, followed by winged pods that usually contain two seeds. Its pale yellow timber is used for tool handles, carpentry, plywood, and fencing. The species is classified as Vulnerable. Photographed in the department of BolĂvar, Colombia.
