Pouteria caimito (Abiu)

A fruit tree indigenous to the tropical regions of South America and Central America. The plant bears bright yellow fruits with translucent flesh, featuring a jelly-like consistency and a sweet taste that is eaten raw. The fruit is called caimo in Colombia and is sold in markets close to where it is cultivated. The fruits have a thin skin that bruises easily and cannot be stored for long. Commercially, the wood is valued for its heavy, hard, and moderately durable qualities. Photographed in the department of Quindio, Colombia.
