Polylepis serrata

A high-Andean tree native to Peru, Polylepis serrata grows in cold mountain woodland and shrubland above much of the surrounding forest. Its twisted trunks and layered, peeling bark help protect living tissues in an environment with intense sunlight, frost, and strong winds. Small greenish flowers develop in hanging clusters among the divided leaves. Photographed in Ecuador.
