Polylepis incana

Polylepis incana is a high-elevation Andean tree native from Colombia through Ecuador to Peru. Its trunk and branches develop layered, peeling reddish-brown bark that helps protect living tissue in cold mountain conditions. Small compound leaves form an open crown above the contorted wood. The species occurs naturally at elevations above 9,800 feet. Research-grade observations document it in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Photographed in Colombia.
