Polygala fruticosa vivid purple winged flowers with fringed white crests

Polygala fruticosa

An evergreen shrub native to southern Africa, Polygala fruticosa grows in coastal and inland shrublands of the Cape region. Its vivid purple flowers have two broad winglike sepals and a central keel ending in a fringed white crest. Thick leaves are crowded along the branches, and the compact growth habit distinguishes it from larger related shrubs. Photographed in Florida.
