Originally hailing from Mexico, Central America, Colombia, and Venezuela, the deciduous tree is very popular in tropical climates globally. Its leaves are thick, leathery, and the plant is known for its free-flowering habit, with showy, fragrant blossoms. The flower color can vary significantly depending on the cultivar​ of which there are many. The plant may have therapeutic utility in cardiovascular disorders​.
