Pleuranthodium hellwigii

Pleuranthodium hellwigii is a perennial rhizomatous herb native to Papua New Guinea. It belongs to the ginger family and grows in wet tropical forest. Broad leaves develop along upright leafy shoots, while the flower cluster hangs on a separate curved stalk. Numerous pale pink flowers are arranged among reddish bracts along the pendant inflorescence. The underground rhizome supports renewed leafy growth in warm, humid conditions. Photographed in Florida.
