Pleroma granulosum


An evergreen shrub or small tree native to southeastern and southern Brazil and parts of Bolivia, Pleroma granulosum develops a rounded crown in warm, humid habitats. The large flowers have five vivid violet-purple petals and long curved stamens, while the prominently veined leaves are arranged opposite one another. It is widely planted as an ornamental flowering tree in subtropical regions. Photographed in Florida.
