Plaza Mayor de Lima, also known as Plaza de Armas, is the historic heart of Peru’s capital city. Located in the center of Lima’s old town, this iconic square dates back to the city’s founding by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535. The plaza is surrounded by some of Lima’s most significant colonial-era buildings, including the Cathedral of Lima, the Government Palace (Palacio de Gobierno), the Archbishop’s Palace, and the Municipal Palace. With its symmetrical layout, tall palm trees, and a grand central fountain made of bronze, the plaza offers a striking blend of architectural elegance and open public space.
Plaza Mayor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains a focal point of civic and religious celebrations in Lima. The square bustles daily with tourists and locals enjoying the architecture, and cultural atmosphere. The ceremonial Changing of the Guard at the Government Palace is a popular attraction, while the nearby cathedral houses the tomb of Francisco Pizarro.
