A cool-season crop that originated in the Mediterranean Basin and the Near East. Finds from Egypt suggest cultivation from around 4800–4400 BC in the Nile delta area. The crop was also present in Georgia in the 5th millennium BC​. Peas are adaptable to various climates but grow best at cooler temperatures between 50 to 64°F and are unsuitable for the summer heat of warmer climates. They can be low-growing or vining, with the latter using thin tendrils to climb supports. Many cultivars reach maturity about 60 days after planting, and the peas can self-pollinate.
