Pinanga coronata
A clustering palm native to the Indonesian islands from Sumatra to the Lesser Sundas, it belongs to the Arecaceae family and is commonly called ivory cane palm. It grows in lowland and mountain forests, including steep hillsides. Slender stems have evenly spaced leaf scars, and developing fronds can emerge bronze or purple before turning green. Branched flower clusters hang below the crownshaft, with cream-colored male and female flowers arranged in groups of three. The fruits ripen through yellow-pink to red or brownish red, with a single seed inside each. Insects pollinate the flowers. It can be propagated from seed. Photographed in Colombia.
