Phytolacca dioica hanging raceme of small greenish-white flowers and developing fruits

Phytolacca dioica

A massive tree-like perennial native to subtropical South America, Phytolacca dioica develops a broad crown and an enlarged, water-storing trunk formed from soft tissues rather than conventional wood. Male and female flowers occur on separate plants. The small greenish-white flowers are arranged along hanging racemes, followed on female trees by dark fleshy fruits. Photographed in Colombia.
