Phytolacca americana

Phytolacca americana is a large perennial herb native to eastern North America. Thick reddish stems support broad leaves and elongated flower clusters that mature into dark purple-black berries. The plant dies back to a substantial rootstock in cold climates. All parts contain toxic compounds and should not be eaten without specialized knowledge. Research-grade observations document the species in Ecuador. Photographed in Colombia.
