Phragmipedium longifolium

A perennial slipper orchid native from Costa Rica to Ecuador and northern Brazil, it belongs to the Orchidaceae family. It grows in wet tropical habitats, including riverbanks, rocky slopes, and road cuts. Its narrow, dark green leaves arise from short woody rhizomes. Flowering stems can reach about three feet tall and produce several flowers. The flowers are green to yellow with maroon markings, long twisting petals, and a deeply pouch-shaped lip. The fruits are curved, dark purple-brown capsules. Photographed in Quindio, Colombia.
