Phormium tenax

Phormium tenax is a robust evergreen perennial native to New Zealand and Norfolk Island. Dense fans of long sword-shaped leaves rise from underground rhizomes. Tall branched stalks carry tubular red-orange flowers rich in nectar, followed by upright seed capsules. The species is widely cultivated for its architectural foliage, and research-grade observations document it in Colombia and Peru. Photographed in Colombia.
