Phoenicopterus ruber (American Flamingo)

The American Flamingo, is a striking bird known for its vibrant pink plumage, long, thin legs, and uniquely shaped neck. These birds are native to the Caribbean, the northern coast of South America, and the Galápagos Islands. American Flamingos have a lifespan of about 40 years in the wild and are typically non-migratory, though some populations may move short distances seasonally. Their diet primarily consists of small organisms such as algae, diatoms, and small crustaceans, which contribute to their pink coloration.

These birds play a significant role in their ecosystem, particularly in nutrient cycling and energy flow, as they feed in shallow water bodies. However, they can negatively impact human interests, especially in aquaculture, by feeding on shrimp larvae. The global population is estimated to be around 300,000 individuals.
