Phaseolus vulgaris

An annual herb domesticated in the Americas, Phaseolus vulgaris includes the common bean and its many climbing and bush forms. The species produces compound leaves, pea-shaped flowers, and pods containing the edible dry beans or green beans that are cultivated worldwide. Its long history of selection has produced extensive variation in seed form, growth habit, and flower color. Photographed in Panama.
