Pereskia aculeata

A scrambling, leafy cactus native to tropical South America, Pereskia aculeata develops woody climbing stems armed with paired spines. Unlike most cacti, it retains broad leaves and produces open white to cream flowers with numerous stamens, followed by edible fruits. Its leaves are also eaten in parts of Brazil, where they are valued as a protein-rich vegetable. Photographed in Colombia.
