Pavonia paniculata has a yellow flower and ribbed green buds

Pavonia paniculata

Native from Mexico through tropical America, this subshrub or shrub belongs to the mallow family. It can reach about ten feet tall. Its stems and flower stalks bear conspicuous hairs, while yellow flowers appear in the leaf axils or gather near the branch tips. The stamens form a central tube, with the style extending beyond it. The heart-based leaves may be shallowly three-lobed, and the flower clusters are sticky with glandular hairs. Slender green bracts surround each flower bud, and the fruit separates into individual one-seeded segments. Photographed in Colombia.
