Passiflora santos-llatasii
Native to the western cloud forests of Huancabamba Province in northern Peru, this perennial climbing vine becomes partly woody with age. It occurs in Peru between about 3,600 and 7,550 feet. White flowers have an intricate cream and green corona, while two-lobed leaves may show white, pink, or reddish markings. Small nectar glands resemble butterfly eggs and may discourage egg-laying. During the dry season, it usually loses its leaves and regrows when rains return. Its limited known populations are threatened by agricultural expansion and development. Photographed in Colombia.
