Passiflora quadrangularis (Giant Granadilla)

Native to northeastern Brazil, northern Brazil, southeastern Brazil, southern Brazil, west-central Brazil, and Colombia, this is a vine in the Passifloraceae family. The Giant Granadilla, recognized as the largest fruit-bearing member within its genus, originates from the tropical expanses of northern South America below 5,000 feet. The red, bowl-shaped flowers exuding a sweet aroma, adorned with large purple and white coronal filaments, culminates in the revelation of its green fruit. The fruit’s edible mesocarp is acknowledged for being a rich source of phytochemicals, which are compounds known for their health benefits​. The vine has the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. It is primarily used as a juice and is very similar in taste to Passiflora ligularis (granadilla).
