Passiflora loefgrenii
Native to the Atlantic rainforest of southeastern and southern Brazil, this perennial climbing vine produces large purple flowers on long stalks. The flowers change position as they open: their anthers and styles initially stand upright, then bend toward the corona. This allows both hummingbirds and carpenter bees to pollinate them at different stages. It is a short-day plant, flowering most readily when days are shorter than 12 hours. Photographed in Colombia.
