Paphiopedilum Maudiae has a burgundy slipper orchid among strap leaves

Paphiopedilum Maudiae

Developed in cultivation from Paphiopedilum callosum and Paphiopedilum lawrenceanum, this evergreen perennial hybrid slipper orchid forms compact fans of mottled foliage. Flowers are borne singly and can reach about four inches across. Green-and-white forms have strongly striped upper sepals, while colored selections range into deep burgundy. The cross has been influential in breeding the many mottled-leaved hybrids commonly called Maudiae types. Photographed in Florida.
