Paphiopedilum barbigerum

A lithophytic perennial orchid native from southern China through northern Indochina, Paphiopedilum barbigerum grows on limestone cliffs and rocky forest slopes in subtropical habitats. Its single flower rises above a compact fan of strap-shaped leaves. The bloom has a broad white dorsal sepal marked with purple spots and veins, narrow undulating yellow-green petals patterned with brown, and a deep brown slipper-shaped pouch. Kew recognizes three accepted varieties within the species. Photographed in Florida.
