Narrow purple Onoseris albicans rays spread around an orange-gold centre of projecting florets

Onoseris albicans

Native from Ecuador to western Bolivia, this perennial herb of the Andes grows about one to two and a half feet tall. Its narrow leaves have a white, woolly covering and edges that roll downward. Solitary flower heads rise on long stalks, with violet ray florets surrounding smaller tubular florets with yellow lobes. The small, dry fruits carry a tuft of yellowish bristles. In Peru and Bolivia, it grows between about 4,600 and 10,500 feet. Photographed in Peru.
