Oncidium splendidum has yellow orchid sprays on tree branch

Oncidium splendidum

Native to Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, this perennial orchid grows on rocky hillsides in warm conditions. Clustered pseudobulbs carry thick, leathery leaves, giving it the mule-ear form associated with this group of orchids. Upright, branching flower stems can reach about 4 feet tall. Large yellow flowers with brown markings open from spring into early summer and remain attractive for an extended period. The broad yellow lip is particularly conspicuous. Photographed in Florida.
