Oncidium altissimum (Popcorn Orchid)
Native to the Caribbean, this perennial epiphytic orchid grows on trees in warm, moist habitats. Its clustered pseudobulbs carry two leaves and support long, arching, branched flower sprays that can reach about 6 feet. Its glossy yellow flowers have brown markings. In cultivation, flowering can occur throughout the year, with a peak in spring. The broad yellow lips give the flowers their dancing-lady appearance. Mature plants develop substantial clumps, with flower sprays extending well beyond the foliage. It is often found growing in association with ants. Photographed in Florida.
