Oenothera multicaulis
Native to parts of southern Mexico and Guatemala, and from Colombia and Venezuela south to western Bolivia, this perennial herb or small subshrub grows in montane habitats. In Colombia, it is recorded between about 6,500 and 13,250 feet. Its spreading stems may have reddish tones, and the flowers have four petals. Flower colors can vary on the same plant, from yellow or yellow-green to orange-red. Its flowers open around sunrise and can fertilize themselves, allowing seed production without cross-pollination. Photographed in Colombia.
