An Odontonema callistachyum inflorescence with lavender-purple flowers

Odontonema callistachyum

Native to Mexico and Central America, this plant is a perennial herb or shrub of seasonally dry tropical habitats. Its pink to mauve flowers grow in terminal clusters, sometimes with two side branches at the base. Each slender corolla tube widens slightly at the throat and ends in two lips: the upper lip has two short lobes and the lower has three. Flowers have two fertile stamens and two minute sterile stamens. Different floral forms hold the anthers either inside or beyond the corolla. Photographed in Florida.
