Nicotiana tomentosa
Native to the central Andes of western South America, this woody tobacco species grows as a tree. Its flowering shoots carry tubular blossoms with five spreading lobes around the mouth. Its leaves contain nicotine, a toxic alkaloid involved in the plant’s defence against herbivores. It belongs to the nightshade family, Solanaceae. Photographed in Peru.
